In 2014,
the North Shore Railroad Company was named a

Governor’s ImPAct Award Recipient,

being one of 50 Pennsylvania companies and entrepreneurs recognized for “creating jobs, developing ideas, reaching new markets, and making positive contributions in local communities.”

In response to this award, North Shore’s history, and 30th Anniversary, Pennsylvania State Representatives: Lynda Schlegel Culver, Kurt A. Masser, and Richard Mirabito sponsored a

Citation to North Shore by the
House of Representatives of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
.

“Whereas, the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania is always proud to recognize those businesses which, through adherence to the highest standards over the years, contribute to the well-being of their communities and ultimately to all the people of this Commonwealth; and

“Whereas, North Shore Railroad was honored with the 2014 Governor’s Small Business Impact Award for the Central Pennsylvania Region during an event, which was held on May 30, 2014; and

“Whereas, North Shore Railroad is being recognized for its thirty-year history as a small family-owned and operated business. The company grew from fifteen employees handling one thousand two hundred carloads to nearly one hundred employees handling more than thirty thousand carloads per year. Throughout its history, North Shore Railroad has never laid off or furloughed any employee and, in the last year, it has contributed more than $7 million to the economy. With an innovative and progressive attitude, along with the conviction to operate with integrity and vision, North Shore Railroad has earned a reputation for quality service since its inception.

“Now therefore, the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania congratulates North Shore Railroad on the great honor which has been bestowed upon it; offers best wishes for continued growth and success in the years to come.”

Mission Statement

To be the most customer focused and safest transportation system possible
To provide quality regional rail freight service to customers in Central Pennsylvania
To conduct our business with the highest degree of integrity and professionalism
To be responsible civic partners with the communities we serve

The North Shore Railroad Company is comprised of six short line railroads - Juniata Valley Railroad (JVRR), Lycoming Valley Railroad (LVRR), Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad (NBER), North Shore Railroad (NSHR), Shamokin Valley Railroad (SVRR), and Union County Industrial Railroad (UCIR). The JVRR, LVRR, NBER, NSHR, SVRR operate on tracks owned by the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority. The UCIR has portions of track that are held by private parties as well as a portion that is owned by the Joint Rail Authority.

We provide quality rail service to a variety of businesses and industries located in Central Pennsylvania, running on 247.2 miles of track. The commodities we handle are as varied as the businesses themselves. Aggregates, coal, grain, and plastics are just a small sampling of the range of commodities that move in, out and around Central PA on the rails.

“Pennsylvania has seen a rebirth in its rail industry, reducing congestion and pollution, and responding to the demand of new and expanded businesses throughout the state. The North Shore Railroad is a fine example of six short lines that serve the people and businesses of central Pennsylvania. I had the opportunity to travel along the NSHR system, and the amount of business development and continued business opportunities for the region was clearly evident. Rail service is a critical link for the state’s manufacturing sector and I am proud to represent an important piece of that invaluable transportation network.”
-Senator Gene Yaw
