Winfield Rail Grade Crossing Replacement Set for September 2022

Updated: September 6, 2022

WINFIELD, PA – A cooperative effort of the Union County Industrial Railroad and PennDOT will result in a new, long-lasting, custom tub-style rail/highway crossing being installed across the West Branch Highway (Route 15) in Winfield, PA, Union Township.

The crossing work will begin on Thursday, September 15, 2022, and anticipated completion date is Monday, September 26, 2022. The work will be completed in two phases – the northbound Route 15 portion and the southbound Route 15 portion.

Work on the southbound lanes will take place from September 15th through September 19th, and work on the northbound lane will take place from September 19th through September 25th. During this time, both directions (northbound and southbound) will be limited to single-lane traffic flow, and the speed limit will be reduced to 30 mph.

Both lanes will be closed for night work from 10pm on Friday, September 23rd, until 6am on Saturday, September 24th. A detour will be in place during this time.

All work is scheduled to be complete on Monday, September 26th, which is when two-lane traffic for both directions should reopen.

This crossing was completely rebuilt in 2010. However, high traffic volumes, including tractor trailers and trucks related to construction of the Central Susquehanna Valley Throughway (CSVT), have taken a hard toll on the crossing. In June 2018, UCIR worked with PennDOT to raise the switch that abuts the highway, surface the entire crossing, and pave the approaches - a three day project. UCIR had to remove panels and install new asphalt in 2020 and again in 2021. In the past decade, the Winfield crossing has cost more than a half of a million dollars to maintain!
